Featuring Pike Market Senior Center & Food Bank

November 8, 2021

This week, we’re highlighting the tireless work of Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank as our Cause of the Week. Through our MicroMatching program, 52andChange will match every microgift (give $1, $2, $3… never more than $10)*, up to $500!

There are countless reasons to unite for this cause (we rally around $1 gifts!). They’ve been around since 1978, and what started off as a gathering place in the heart of Seattle’s Pike Place Market grew to a hub offering all kinds of services to a far wider constituency. Though located in an area that has both high rents and high incomes, it’s also the epicenter of the Seattle area’s homelessness crisis.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic they have also found a way to keep their hours stable and doors open.

The Senior Center strives to make each day better and safer for older adults. It is both a traditional senior center and a front-line human services agency. Visitors enjoy activities, games, and meals, and also access intensive social-work case management. There is no cost for any services, and meals are served seven days a week because many clients need support every day. In 2021 The Pike Market Senior Center hopes to serve 40,000 free, nutritious meals to seniors. Around 1,500 older adults visit the Pike Market Senior Center each year.

The Food Bank serves people of all ages in their community who face hunger. They welcome people to select about 20 pounds of free groceries each week, offer home delivery to people with disabilities, and distribute ready-to-eat “no-cook” bags for people without access to cooking facilities or safe food storage.

Alongside all the work they do every day, we're impressed by Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank’s responsible spending and strong leadership. Their focus is on doing the work rather than talking about it — which is why we need to spread the word!

There’s so much more! Find ways to connect with them, hear more of their story, and give a dollar or two of support. If we all give a little, together, we will change the world!
