Sandy Hook Promise is a moderate, above-the-politics organization that supports sensible program and policy solutions that address the “human side” of gun violence by preventing individuals from ever getting to the point of picking up a firearm to hurt themselves or others. Our words, actions, and impact nationwide are intended to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation.

FROM SANDY HOOK PROMISE:

19 students and 2 adults were killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The deadliest shooting at an elementary school since our loved ones were murdered at Sandy Hook almost 10 years ago just ripped apart over a dozen more families.

Watching the news, we’re reliving our worst nightmare again.
Our hearts ache for those families and that community. And our hearts ache knowing it didn’t have to be this way – our hearts ache because we know gun violence is preventable. That’s why now, more than ever, we cannot waver in our commitment to protect more children from gun violence. We must do more.

The most meaningful way for us to honor our loved ones, those who were murdered in Uvalde and all the precious lives taken by gun violence across the country is by doing everything we possibly can to prevent future tragedies. We must take meaningful action now, and every day until this epidemic of violence ends.

Please, will you help to support our lifesaving work? This is the real, human toll of inaction, and that’s why our work cannot stop. We cannot slow down. Too many precious lives are at risk if we do.
In especially painful moments like these, we’re so grateful to have you by our side. It’s your support that makes our lifesaving work possible, and we can never thank you enough.

Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, we can take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.

KNOW THE SIGNS PROGRAMS:

The mission of Sandy Hook Promise is to end school shootings and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through our proven, evidence-informed Know the Signs programs and sensible, bipartisan school and gun safety legislation, we teach young people and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others.

Research has proven that Sandy Hook Promise’s Know the Signs programs effectively teach youth and adults how to prevent school violence, shootings, and other harmful acts. Students and educators learn how to identify at-risk behaviors and intervene to get help. These early-prevention measures empower everyone to help keep schools and communities safe.

Each program offers 30 to 40 minutes of student training that can be delivered in-person or online. Our programs also align with Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies for Social-Emotional Learning including relationship skills, social awareness, responsible decision-making and self-awareness. All training and resource materials (lesson plans, activities, games, and discussion guides etc) are provided at no cost and are accessible on-demand via Sandy Hook Promise’s Learning Center.

Visit Sandy Hook Promise Action Fund, our sister organization, to find out how you can help pass common sense reforms.

In the U.S., firearms are now the leading cause of death for children under age 19. Suicide is the second-leading, with firearms being the most deadly tool for completion. The ripple effects of gun violence nationwide are devastating. The trauma of shootings and suicides reaches beyond families whose loved ones are killed or injured. The pain and fear endures, leaving scars for life that affect entire communities.

Assault Weapons And High-Capacity Magazines:

High-capacity magazines allow firearms to be discharged repeatedly without reloading. This increases the potential for them to harm more people very quickly. An assault weapon refers to a semi-automatic, military-style firearm with high muzzle velocity and rapid rate of fire. Together, high-capacity magazines and assault weapons increase the lethality of gun violence. We support legislation prohibiting the sale and transfer of high-capacity magazines and assault weapons.
