Save our Monarchs and MicroMatching

June 13, 2022

Every week we shine the spotlight on a different nonprofit that is working to solve a unique problem, and gather and match as many microdonations ($1 - $10) as we can to support their tireless efforts. We believe that if we all pitch in a little, together, we can make a big difference!

The monarch butterfly is in trouble (their population has decreased by 90% since 1992!), so this week we’re focusing our microgiving and outreach efforts on spreading the news about Save Our Monarchs and their very simple mission: Plant milkweed. It's the only way to bring back the monarch.

Why is milkweed so important?

  • Monarch butterflies are unique in many ways but they are especially picky about where they lay their eggs. Monarchs will only reproduce on milkweed plants.

  • Milkweed leaves become the nutrition for caterpillars and, once they bloom, the nectar for adult butterflies.

  • Milkweed is the only form of food for the monarch butterfly and its numbers are also down 90%, rapidly disappearing due to loss of habitat.

We are so grateful for Save Our Monarchs’ efforts; they've distributed more than three million packets of milkweed since 2015. Over 20,000 schools, scout troops, and other organizations have participated in their “Pollinator Garden” programming.

As pollinators, the monarch butterfly’s migration across the North American continent is essential for many ecosystems to thrive, so we are all affected by their decline! Help support Save Our Monarchs by pitching in a little and planting milkweed wherever you can, rebuilding habitats so monarchs can survive. Pass this news along… it’s a simple solution to a big problem.

If we all give a little together (and plant milkweed), we can change the world!

Thanks for making a difference this week.
