OUR PITCH

The story of AIDS is a story of dignity, social justice, humanity, and the thousands of people who fell, fought, and provided care and comfort. The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway was born out of a desire to recognize the AIDS crisis in Seattle, and our communities’ responses to this crisis. The AMP will be a place of remembrance and reflection, using public artwork to tell the stories of those impacted by HIV/AIDS. We are reaching the finish line; it's almost complete! Thank you for supporting our efforts.

creating the amp

A passionate group of volunteers and community leaders, including people living with HIV, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ people, came together to create The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway. They set three goals:

  1. Use public art to create a physical place for reflection and remembrance
  2. Use technology to share stories of the epidemic and the diverse community responses to the crisis
  3. Provide a call to action to end HIV/AIDS, stigma, and discrimination

THE PATHWAY ART

The artworks of The AMP are designed to take visitors through an emotional and historical journey related to the AIDS epidemic in our region from the early 1980s to today. Created by artists of different backgrounds and perspectives, they bring remembrance, reflection, creativity, and action around HIV and AIDS, to all of us.

Artists of The AMP:

  • Civilization: "We're Already Here"
  • Storme Webber: "In This Way We Loved One Another"
  • Horatio Hung-Yan Law: "Ribbon of Light"
  • Christopher Paul Jordan: "andimgonnamisseverybody"

ORAL HISTORY

Stories are a key component of The AMP. We’ve collected more than 40 interviews that reflect the broad range of people impacted by the AIDS crisis in our region—including people living with AIDS and HIV, family members, friends, caretakers, activists, and those who provided community services, comfort, and compassion. Technology will allow visitors to experience personal stories and learn about HIV/AIDS using their smartphones. This augmented reality component, accessed through an app, will work with the artwork and other onsite physical elements.

THE LIST OF NAMES

Reading a name can help us connect to personal memories. This collection of names from Washington State of those who’ve died shows the vast impact of HIV/AIDS. View the names here: https://theamp.org/history/nam...

why 52andchange chose the amp

  • It is important to have meaningful public artwork in our communities, and AIDS awareness needs to be kept visible.
  • A dedicated space for remembrance and reflection can be healing and calming for all.
  • The combination of stories, art, history, and action is a great way to educate.
  • The permanent location on Capitol Hill in Seattle is an area with a direct connection to the city’s LGBTQ history and was the epicenter of the early AIDS crisis in Washington state.

Latest news from 52andChange!

Together we’ve become volunteers in places we would have never expected, planted milkweed for butterflies, provided books to kids in need, helped save endangered turtles, helped turn excess food into nutrition, helped bring art to youth, educated one another about how we are connected to our delicate food systems, helped save abandoned horses and given old dogs new hope, watched foster youth shine in the spotlight of movie making, helped clean tires out of rivers… we could go on and on and on. It is an absolute joy to be a part of such an amazing network of humans making a difference.
